Johnson Controls reaches goal of 800 LEED® credentialed professionals worldwide
Global energy efficiency leader delivers complete portfolio management solutions

(December 22, 2009) – Illustrating its leadership in the global energy efficiency and sustainability marketplace, Johnson Controls, Inc. (NYSE: JCI) achieved the goal it set a year ago to have 800 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®) credentialed employees worldwide.

Through its increasing network of LEED professionals, Johnson Controls understands how a building can perform more efficiently with less impact on the environment. The company’s comprehensive range of real estate services and energy efficient solutions help its global customers control rising energy costs and enhance the value and competitiveness of their buildings.

Johnson Controls surpassed its goal of 500 LEED Accredited Professionals in North America, an objective that was established a year ago at Greenbuild 2008. Approximately 300 credentialed employees are spread throughout other parts of the world. More than 100 employees have achieved LEED Green Associate status, the newest credential for green building professionals that denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction and operations.

Johnson Controls is involved in the real estate portfolio management and technical aspects of hundreds of LEED registered or certified projects worldwide, including:

• Manpower Inc. World Headquarters – Manpower Inc.’s world headquarters has achieved Gold status under the LEED certification system—the first new building in Milwaukee, Wis., to earn that distinction. Serving as the project manager, Johnson Controls advised the company on selection of the appropriate building equipment and materials to ensure Manpower achieved the necessary balance of meeting its design principles and LEED certification, as well as project budget and timeline requirements.

• Empire State Building – Johnson Controls, along with a team of outside experts, is leading a retrofit process which will reduce energy consumption by up to 38 percent, provide $4.4 million in annual energy savings and is forecasted to repay its incremental costs over a three-year period. The building will qualify for LEED EB Gold under current USGBC standards and it will attempt to certify for the same upon completion of work.

• Johnson Controls Corporate Headquarters – Johnson Controls will be submitting an application to the U.S. Green Building Council for its LEED Platinum certification and is hopeful that it will receive this recognition. This application will be made for its headquarters campus, which includes four buildings and the surrounding grounds.

Under the theme – Efficiency Now, it’s never been more important – Johnson Controls showcased its energy efficient tools, technologies and case studies at this year’s Greenbuild conference, November 2009 in Phoenix, Ariz., including its Energy and Emissions Management System. Recognized as a market leader in Enterprise Carbon Accounting software by Groom Energy Solutions, this Web-based tool is used to inventory, track, manage and forecast energy use and carbon emissions for more than 5,000 buildings around the globe.
